Winter Is Coming: Preparing Ukraine's Vulnerable Populations for the Cold
As temperatures drop below -20°C in eastern Ukraine, we're racing to distribute heating equipment, warm clothing, and emergency shelters before the cold sets in.
The Other Battle: Surviving Winter in a War Zone
While the world focuses on military developments, millions of Ukrainians face a silent, deadly threat: the approaching winter. With heating infrastructure destroyed in dozens of cities and electricity cuts rolling through even major urban areas, winter 2024 could be devastating.
The Scale of the Problem
According to UN estimates, over 1.2 million Ukrainians have no reliable heating this winter. In Kherson Oblast alone, where Russian forces deliberately destroyed heating plants during their withdrawal, temperatures regularly drop to -18°C. For the elderly, children, and sick — the consequences can be fatal.
What We're Doing
Call of Heart launched the Winter Survival Initiative in October, distributing:
- 2,400 generator units for community centers and hospitals
- 15,000 thermal blankets for households in frontline regions
- 890 propane heaters for families whose central heating is gone
- Winter clothing packages for 6,200 children
Emergency Shelter Program
We've established 14 "warming centers" in Kharkiv, Kherson, and Mykolaiv — heated community spaces where people can come to warm up, charge devices, and access hot meals. These centers have welcomed over 28,000 visitors since November 1st.
Your winter donation is urgent. Every $75 provides a thermal heating package for one family for the entire winter season.
